Llyn Tegid, Bala
Project background
Although Llyn Tegid is a natural lake, it is managed under reservoir Reservoirs Act 1975 as the lake’s embankments protect the town of Bala from flooding. The works involved the strengthening of embankments and substantial landscape enhancements.

Construction
- Removal of self-seeded trees together with substantial root balls from embankment
- Removal and replacement of sections of embankment on a daily basis together with placement of rock armour ensuring that excavations were reinstated at the end of every shift therefore not exposing the town to risk of flooding during the course of the works.
- Re-form and strengthen the embankments of Afon Tryweryn and Afon Dyfrdwy
- Placed 13,000+ tonnes of rock
- Construct a new retaining wall and strengthening a section of embankment to enable the expansion of Bala Railway
- Form over 1000m of new tarmac footpath along Llyn Tegid, Afon Dyfrdwy and Afon Tryweryn embankments
- Re-forming and improvements to the lake foreshore car park to prevent cars driving onto protected habitats
- Construct new accessible ramps and access points and high quality seating areas
- Landscaping the Leisure Centre area with new seating and planting areas

- Work completed ahead of programme & footpaths re-opened ahead of deadline

- Received an ICE award for Community Engagement as testament to excellent community engagement, focusing on social, economic, and ecological well-being, alongside major engineering works to protect over 800 properties.
